Parent Pathways

Parent Pathways is a voluntary service designed to provide tailored pre-employment support for eligible parents and carers with children up to 6 years of age. Starting from 1 November 2024, this service can assist those who want to prepare for study or work but need some guidance to get ready.

Mai-Wel, through Parent Pathways, focuses on providing pre-employment assistance that helps parents and carers achieve their personal, study, or work goals. With the support of a dedicated mentor, you’ll receive flexible assistance to develop a personalised plan tailored to your needs.

Who Can Access Parent Pathways?

You may be eligible for Parent Pathways if you:

  • Have a child under 6 years old
  • Are not currently in paid employment
  • Live in an area serviced by Parent Pathways

You must also meet one of the following payment conditions, provided through Services Australia/Centrelink:

  • Parenting Payment
  • Carer Payment
  • Special Benefit

If you’re not receiving one of these payments, you may still be eligible if you:

  • Are under 22 years old
  • Did not finish Year 12 or obtain a Year 12 qualification
  • Are a First Nations parent or carer

Eligible individuals living in non-remote areas who meet these requirements will receive a letter from Services Australia/Centrelink with details on how to volunteer for this service.

What Support is Available?

Mai-Wel offers pre-employment support through qualified mentors in your local area to help you prepare for study, training, or employment. Our mentors can assist with:

  • Career planning and guidance
  • Language or literacy programs
  • Support with childcare arrangements and referrals to childcare cost assistance
  • Referrals to external services such as financial information or family and domestic violence support

Note: Financial support, including help with the cost of childcare or training, will be provided through Services Australia/Centrelink.

How Does Parent Pathways Work?

Participation in Parent Pathways is completely voluntary and flexible. You’ll work with a mentor to create a personalised plan that focuses on your specific circumstances and goals. You can join, leave, or take a break from the service whenever needed.

The service is designed to work around your family life, and your children are always welcome to attend appointments, whether they are held in person, over the phone, or online. If your situation changes or an activity doesn’t suit your schedule, your mentor will help you adjust your plan.

Once your Goal Plan is in place, you’ll receive ongoing support from your mentor to help you achieve your objectives.
