Zoey Inspires the Next Generation at Weston Community Preschool
Zoey’s journey is a testament to her resilience and dedication. A young woman with a hearing impairment and a cochlear implant, Zoey has been a participant at Mai-Wel, where she has worked tirelessly to build her confidence and capacity to join the workforce. With a passion for helping others and a special talent for Auslan, Zoey is paving the way for a brighter future.
Zoey, who communicates using Auslan, has recently achieved a significant milestone by completing her Certificate II in Auslan through TAFE NSW. Additionally, she has earned a certificate in Vocational Pathways, further equipping her with the skills needed to succeed in the workforce. Zoey’s dream is to work with young children who are also hearing impaired, helping them learn Auslan and empowering them to communicate confidently.
Recently, Zoey began work experience at Weston Community Preschool, where she has been able to put her skills into practice. The preschoolers have been learning about the Olympics, and Zoey seized the opportunity to teach them something truly special. She introduced the students to basic Auslan signs, starting with the colors of the Olympic rings. The children were captivated as Zoey led them through the signs for each color, making the lesson both fun and educational.
In addition to teaching the Olympic colors, Zoey is also showing the children how to sign “all the colors of the rainbow” in Auslan. Her enthusiasm and patience have made her a hit with the preschoolers, who are eager to learn and communicate in this new language.
Zoey’s experience at Weston Community Preschool is a shining example of how passion, dedication, and the right support can open doors to new opportunities. With her dream of helping young children learn Auslan becoming a reality, Zoey is well on her way to making a lasting impact in her community.
